Notes

Engelmann's hedgehog cactus (Echinocereus engelmannii) is a succulent for borders, containers, and low maintenance gardens. It is hardy to USDA zone 8, or down to 10°F (-12°C). This plant likes full sun and dry, sandy or loamy soil. Large magenta to pale pink flowers open during the day and last several days in spring, and bees visit the blooms. A spiny red fruit follows. Deer and rabbits tend to browse other plants first.

Pairs well with Aeonium, Lady fingers, and Yellow bird of paradise.
