Notes
'Explorer' peony (Paeonia lactiflora 'Explorer') is a perennial for borders, cut flowers, and perennial beds. It is hardy to USDA zone 3, or down to -40°F (-40°C). This plant likes full or part sun, average moisture, and loamy soil. The large dark red flowers open in mid season and have the usual yellow markings in the center, and the side buds are especially brilliant. Tall, stiff stems hold the blooms upright. Edward Auten, Jr bred it in 1955.
Pairs well with Earth Angel hosta, Pink Impression tulip, and Royal fern.
