Notes

'François Ortegat' peony (Paeonia lactiflora 'François Ortegat') is a perennial for borders, cut flowers, and perennial beds. It is hardy to USDA zone 3, or down to -40°F (-40°C). This plant likes full or part sun, average moisture, and loamy soil. Parmentier bred it in 1850. The semi-double, dark red flowers open in mid to late spring and have a pleasant fragrance. The wiry stems are usually purple.

Pairs well with Goldsturm black-eyed Susan, Cheerfulness daffodil, and Winterberry.
