Notes

Gallion hawthorn (Crataegus mollis) is a tree for pollinator gardens, accents, hedges, and woodland edges. It is hardy to USDA zone 3, or down to -40°F (-40°C). This plant likes full sun to full shade and dry to moist soil of most types. Flat-topped clusters of white, rose-like blossoms open in spring, followed by red fruit. The long, sharp thorns are hazardous, so keep it away from paths and red cedar, which can pass rust diseases to it. It is not a favorite of deer, though hungry deer will eat almost anything.

Pairs well with Common snowberry, Eastern columbine, and Sensitive fern.
