Notes

'George Washington' peony (Paeonia lactiflora 'George Washington') is a perennial for borders and perennial beds. It is hardy to USDA zone 3, or down to -40°F (-40°C). This plant likes full or part sun, average moisture, and loamy soil. Hollis bred it in 1904. The crimson, semi-rose blooms open in early summer and are fragrant. Strong red stems carry dark green leaves with vivid red veins.

Pairs well with Prairie dropseed, American Gold Rush black-eyed Susan, and Black Hero tulip.
