Houpu magnolia (Magnolia officinalis) is a tree with fragrant blooms. It is hardy to USDA zone 5, or down to -20°F (-29°C). This plant likes full or part sun. It blooms in early to late spring with white to cream flowers. The paddle-shaped leaves can reach 50 cm long. It grows fast, up to three feet per year, so plant it in a protected spot and protect it in winter.
