Notes

Southern magnolia (Magnolia grandiflora) is a tree for specimen planting, shade gardens, and low maintenance landscapes. It is hardy to USDA zone 7, or down to 0°F (-18°C). This plant likes full sun to part shade and dry to moist soil of most types. Large white flowers are fragrant and appear throughout summer and into fall. It is not a favorite of deer, though hungry deer will eat almost anything. Prune after blooming, because dormant magnolias do not heal easily.

Pairs well with Oakleaf hydrangea, Autumn fern, and Woodland phlox.
