Notes

'Mardi Gras' peony (Paeonia lactiflora 'Mardi Gras') is a perennial for borders, cut flowers, and perennial beds. It is hardy to USDA zone 3, or down to -40°F (-40°C). This plant likes full or part sun, average moisture, and loamy soil. Dark red guard petals surround a center of flat petalodes with bright buff edges. The blooms open in early summer and are slightly fragrant. Fred E. Winslow bred it.

Pairs well with Balloon flower, Switchgrass, and Woodland phlox.
