Notes

'Maria' Japanese barberry (Berberis thunbergii 'Maria') is a shrub for hedges and pollinator gardens. It is hardy to USDA zone 4, or down to -30°F (-34°C). This plant likes full or part sun and dry to moist, sandy, loamy, or clay soil. Pale yellow flowers open in early to late spring and attract bees, and birds visit the shrub too. It is not a favorite of deer, though hungry deer will eat almost anything. Its dense form grows at a moderate pace.

Pairs well with False indigo, Flowering quince, White oak, and Garlic chives.
