Notes

'Nero' black chokeberry (Aronia melanocarpa 'Nero') is a shrub for food gardens. It is hardy to USDA zone 3, or down to -40°F (-40°C). This plant likes full or part sun. Clusters of fragrant white flowers open in late spring, and dark purplish-black berries follow in late summer. The berries are high in pectin, so they are grown for jams, jellies, and syrup. It spreads by suckers, so give it room.

Pairs well with Red elderberry, Lingonberry, and Autumn Blaze maple.
