Notes

'Nippon Chief' peony (Paeonia lactiflora 'Nippon Chief') is a perennial for borders, cut flowers, and perennial beds. It is hardy to USDA zone 3, or down to -40°F (-40°C). This plant likes full or part sun, average moisture, and loamy soil. Large dark red flowers have yellow markings on the center petaloids. Tall, stiff stems hold the blooms upright, and it is one of the latest Japanese types to flower. Edward Auten, Jr bred it.

Pairs well with Lungwort, Stargazer lily, and Blue grama.
