Notes

'Ruth Schmidt' peony (Paeonia 'Ruth Schmidt') is a perennial for borders, cut flowers, cottage gardens, and specimen planting. It is hardy to USDA zone 3, or down to -40°F (-40°C). This plant likes full or part sun, average moisture, and loamy soil. Hans Maschke bred it, and its cupped dark red flowers are single, up to seven inches wide, and long lasting. It is not a favorite of deer or rabbits, though hungry ones will eat almost anything. Bees and butterflies visit the blooms.

Pairs well with Golden Tiara hosta, Standing Ovation little bluestem, Black Parrot tulip, and Polish Spirit clematis.
