shaggy wood fern

Notes

Shaggy wood fern (Dryopteris atrata) is a fern for shady beds, woodland settings, borders, and containers. It is hardy to USDA zone 5, or down to -20°F (-29°C). This plant likes part sun to full shade and average moisture. It is not a favorite of deer, though hungry deer will eat almost anything. Its arching, glossy, dark green fronds carry black scales that make a nice contrast. It forms a clump about 3 feet tall and wide, and it is semi-evergreen.

Pairs well with Lady fern, Astilbe, and Hornbeam.
