Notes

Wood fern (Dryopteris dilatata) is a fern for accent planting, shade gardens, and woodland settings. It is hardy to USDA zone 5, or down to -20°F (-29°C). This plant likes part sun to full shade, average moisture, and loamy or clay soil. Deer and rabbits tend to browse other plants first. The arching green fronds grow 24 to 36 inches tall and wide at a moderate pace. It also tolerates dry spells once established.

Pairs well with Elegans hosta, Toad lily, and Aureola Japanese forest grass.

Native range

Africa, Guinea, and Ivory Coast.
