Notes

Male fern (Dryopteris filix-mas) is a fern for borders, shade gardens, woodland settings, and rock gardens. It is hardy to USDA zone 4, or down to -30°F (-34°C). This plant likes part sun to full shade and average to moist soil of most types. The rich green fronds are toothed and nearly twice pinnate, and they grow in clusters from a short rhizome. It stays evergreen and adds winter interest. Deer and rabbits tend to browse other plants first.

Pairs well with Woodland phlox, Lungwort, Cinnamon fern, and Sedge.

Native range

Africa, Guinea, and Ivory Coast.
