Notes

'Smoky Joe' peony (Paeonia 'Smoky Joe') is a perennial for borders, cut flowers, cottage gardens, and specimen planting. It is hardy to USDA zone 3, or down to -40°F (-40°C). This plant likes full or part sun, average moisture, and loamy soil. Deer and rabbits tend to browse other plants first. Edward Auten, Jr bred it in 1950. Its fragrant, dark red blooms sit on tall, stiff stems.

Pairs well with Sum and Substance hosta, Prairie dropseed, and Nodding onion.
