Notes

Spreading wood fern (Dryopteris expansa) is a fern for borders and woodland gardens that need low maintenance. It is hardy to USDA zone 3, or down to -40°F (-40°C). This plant likes part sun to full shade and average to moist soil of most types. It grows 24 to 36 inches tall and spreads 12 to 24 inches. It prefers acid to neutral soil, so it suits a shady spot under trees.

Pairs well with Japanese forest grass, Astilbe, and Regal Splendor hosta.
