Notes

'Winter Nelis' pear (Pyrus communis 'Winter Nelis') is a tree for food gardens and pollinator gardens. It is hardy to USDA zone 4, or down to -30°F (-34°C). This plant likes full sun and dry to average, sandy, loamy, or clay soil. White flowers open from early to late spring and draw butterflies, bees, and birds. M. Jean Charles Nelis bred it in 1818. The fruit is grown for fresh eating, but you need a second pear nearby, since it is not self-fertile.

Pairs well with Cortland apple, Woolly yarrow, and Hairy aster.
