Notes

American hazelnut (Corylus americana) is a shrub for hedges, privacy screens, and naturalized areas. It is hardy to USDA zone 4, or down to -30°F (-34°C). This plant likes full sun to full shade and dry to moist soil of most types. It forms a dense, mound-shaped thicket and tends to sucker from the roots, so you may need to thin it often. Birds and squirrels eat the nuts, and the fall color ranges from bright yellow to deep wine-red.

Pairs well with Staghorn sumac, Indian grass, and Butterfly milkweed.
