Notes

Awlfruit sedge (Carex stipata) is a grass for meadow plantings. It is hardy to USDA zone 3, or down to -40°F (-40°C). This plant likes full sun and average to wet soil. It grows 2 to 3 feet tall, or more, with a cluster of brown seed capsules high on each stem. The leaves are coarse and long. Seeds make up 25% of the diet of the swamp sparrow.

Pairs well with Pickerel weed, Swamp milkweed, and Foxtail barley.
