Notes

'Black Velvet' peony (Paeonia lactiflora 'Black Velvet') is a perennial for borders, cut flower gardens, and perennial beds. It is hardy to USDA zone 3, or down to -40°F (-40°C). This plant likes full or part sun, average moisture, and loamy soil. Arthur L. Murawska bred it. The dark red blooms are globular, with three rows of guard petals that hold the center intact. The velvety color does not turn blue or purple with age, and the strong stems hold the flowers upright.

Pairs well with Empress Wu hosta, Goldsturm black-eyed Susan, Quick Fire panicle hydrangea, and Sensitive fern.
