Notes

Carnation (Dianthus superbus) is a perennial for borders and containers, and it needs little care. It is hardy to USDA zone 3, or down to -40°F (-40°C). This plant likes full or part sun and dry to average, sandy, loamy, or chalky soil. Pale lilac, fragrant flowers open from early to late summer and attract butterflies and bees. It is not a favorite of deer, though hungry deer will eat almost anything. It grows 9 to 18 inches tall and wide.

Pairs well with Iris, Ice plant, and Blue grama.
