Notes

'Chief Pontiac' peony (Paeonia 'Chief Pontiac') is a perennial for borders, cut flowers, cottage gardens, and specimen use. It is hardy to USDA zone 3, or down to -40°F (-40°C). This plant likes full or part sun, average moisture, and loamy soil. Walter Z. Mains bred this fragrant peony, and its black red blooms are possibly the darkest of all peonies. Deer and rabbits rarely make it their first choice. Its tall, vigorous stems are heavy and unbending.

Pairs well with Perennial candytuft, Blazing star, Switchgrass, and Stargazer lily.
