Notes
'Chieftain' apple (Malus domestica 'Chieftain') is a tree for the food garden, grown for fresh eating and cooking. It is hardy to USDA zone 4, or down to -30°F (-34°C). This plant likes full or part sun and dry to moist, sandy, loamy, or clay soil. Iowa State University bred it in 1917 from Jonathan and Delicious. Bees visit the spring flowers. You need a second apple tree nearby for pollination, because this one is not self-fertile.
Pairs well with Honeyberry, Siberian iris, and Lupine.
