Notes

Christmas fern (Polystichum acrostichoides) is a fern for woodland and shade gardens, borders, and winter interest. It is hardy to USDA zone 3, or down to -40°F (-40°C). This plant likes part sun to full shade and dry to moist soil of most types. The glossy fronds stay green through winter, and silvery fiddleheads emerge in early spring. It is not a favorite of deer or rabbits, though hungry ones will eat almost anything. Ruffed Grouse visit it, and it grows in a clump rather than a solid carpet.

Pairs well with Lungwort, Solomon's seal, Sedge, and Wintergreen.
