Notes
Japanese tassel fern (Polystichum polyblepharum) is a fern for shade gardens, woodland settings, borders, and winter interest. It is hardy to USDA zone 5, or down to -20°F (-29°C). This plant likes part sun to full shade, average moisture, and sandy, loamy, or chalky soil. Deer and rabbits rarely make it their first choice. New fronds are covered in golden hairs. As the fiddleheads unfurl, they flip backward and look like a tassel.
Pairs well with Foam flower, Lungwort, and Aureola Japanese forest grass.
Native range
Central America, South America, and Panamá.
