Notes

Deerberry (Vaccinium stamineum) is a shrub for borders, hedges, and naturalized areas. It is hardy to USDA zone 5, or down to -20°F (-29°C). This plant likes full sun to part shade and dry to moist, sandy, loamy, or clay soil. Nodding, greenish-white, bell-shaped flowers have a pink tinge. Birds and mammals eat the blue-black berries, and the leaves change color through the seasons. Alkaline soil can cause chlorosis, so choose an acid site.

Pairs well with Bush honeysuckle, Big bluestem, New England aster, and American persimmon.

Eastern North America.
