Notes

'Illini' peony (Paeonia lactiflora 'Illini') is a perennial for borders, cut flowers, and perennial beds. It is hardy to USDA zone 3, or down to -40°F (-40°C). This plant likes full or part sun, average moisture, and loamy soil. Its large, single blooms open black red on tall, stiff stems. The stems stay stiff and upright, so the flowers hold their heads well in the garden and in a vase. Edward Auten, Jr bred this peony.

Pairs well with Anise hyssop, Wild bergamot, Blue sage, and Carnaval De Nice tulip.
