Notes

'Ilse' tree peony (Paeonia suffruticosa 'Ilse') is a shrub for borders, cut flowers, and perennial beds. It is hardy to USDA zone 4, or down to -30°F (-34°C). This plant likes full or part sun, average moisture, and loamy soil. Fragrant ruby-red flowers with black flares open in mid spring. Each bloom is about 8 inches across, and the plant grows 63 to 71 inches tall. Irmtraud Rieck bred it.

Pairs well with Susan magnolia, Minuteman hosta, Christmas fern, and Pink Impression tulip.
