Notes
Indian blanket (Gaillardia pulchella) is an annual for borders, meadows, containers, and pollinator gardens. It grows well in cool weather and can ride out a light frost. This plant likes full sun to part shade and dry to average, sandy, loamy, or chalky soil. It is not a favorite of deer, though hungry deer will eat almost anything. The red and yellow flowers have dark centers and draw butterflies, bees, and birds. Rich soil makes big, floppy plants with few flowers, and deadheading keeps the blooms coming.
Pairs well with Golden tickseed, Diablo cosmos, and Red fescue.
Native range
Eastern and south-central United States and Mexico.
