Notes

Jack in the pulpit (Arisaema triphyllum) is a perennial for shade gardens, woodland gardens, and low maintenance beds. It is hardy to USDA zone 3, or down to -40°F (-40°C). This plant likes full sun to full shade and average to wet, sandy, loamy, or chalky soil. Green and maroon striped hoods bloom in spring beneath large, glossy leaves, and bright red berries appear in late summer. Deer usually look elsewhere for a meal. Leave a heavy, leafy cover in place over winter.

Pairs well with Western sword fern, Eastern columbine, and Common blue violet.
