Notes

'Jefferson' American elm (Ulmus americana 'Jefferson') is a tree for specimen planting, shade gardens, rain gardens, and naturalized areas. It is hardy to USDA zone 5, or down to -20°F (-29°C). This plant likes full or part sun and dry to wet, sandy, loamy, or clay soil. Green flowers open in early to mid spring, and bees, butterflies, and birds visit the tree. It is not a favorite of deer, though hungry deer will eat almost anything. It grows at a rapid rate.

Pairs well with River birch, Oakleaf hydrangea, Big bluestem, and Virginia creeper.
