Notes

New Jersey tea (Ceanothus americanus) is a shrub for borders, pollinator gardens, meadows, and rain gardens. It is hardy to USDA zone 3, or down to -40°F (-40°C). This plant likes full sun to full shade and dry to moist, sandy or loamy soil. Small white flowers appear in branch-tip clusters, and butterflies use them. Turkeys and quail eat the seeds. Deep roots help it handle tough sites.

Pairs well with Standing Ovation little bluestem, Lanceleaf coreopsis, and Great blue lobelia.

Native range

Eastern and central North America.
