Notes

'Nigricans' peony (Paeonia lactiflora 'Nigricans') is a perennial for borders, perennial beds, and cut flowers. It is hardy to USDA zone 3, or down to -40°F (-40°C). This plant likes full or part sun, average moisture, and loamy soil. It grows into a compact, upright clump about 31 inches tall. Deep crimson, fragrant blooms open from late spring to early summer. J. B. Paillet introduced it.

Pairs well with Japanese spirea, Sensitive fern, Spanish bluebell, and Foxtail barley.
