Notes

'Red Velvet' peony (Paeonia 'Red Velvet') is a perennial for borders, cut flowers, cottage gardens, and specimen plantings. It is hardy to USDA zone 3, or down to -40°F (-40°C). This plant likes full or part sun, average moisture, and loamy soil. The single blooms have two rows of velvety dark red petals that stay cupped even in adverse weather. Deer and rabbits tend to pass it by. Auten bred it in 1945.

Pairs well with Creeping phlox, Sedge, Carlton daffodil, and Earth Angel hosta.
