Notes
'Saturnalia' Virginia sweetspire (Itea virginica 'Saturnalia') is a shrub for hedges, rain gardens, and pollinator gardens. It is hardy to USDA zone 5, or down to -20°F (-29°C). This plant likes full or part sun and average to wet soil. Its arching stems carry fragrant blooms in spring and summer, and butterflies, hummingbirds, bees, and birds visit them. Deer tend to browse other plants first. Once settled in, it is drought tolerant.
Pairs well with Hardy hibiscus, Switchgrass, and Inkberry.
