Notes

'Sheyenne Chief' peony (Paeonia lactiflora 'Sheyenne Chief') is a perennial for borders, cut flowers, and perennial beds. It is hardy to USDA zone 3, or down to -40°F (-40°C). This plant likes full or part sun, average moisture, and loamy soil. Ben Gilbertson bred it, and it first bloomed in 1971. The dark red double blooms open late and slowly, and they have no fragrance. Strong stems hold the flowers up above clean, dark green leaves.

Pairs well with New England aster, Spanish bluebell, and Sedge.
