Notes

'Spangled Star' carnation (Dianthus 'Spangled Star') is a perennial for borders, rock gardens, containers, and cottage gardens. It is hardy to USDA zone 4, or down to -30°F (-34°C). This plant likes full or part sun and dry to average, sandy, loamy, or clay soil. It grows 6 to 9 inches tall and bears fragrant red flowers with pink margins and blotches. Butterflies and bees visit the blooms in spring and summer. It is not a favorite of deer or rabbits, though hungry ones will eat almost anything.

Pairs well with Blue fescue, Stargazer lily, and Bowl of Beauty peony.
