Notes

'Thunderhead' Japanese black pine (Pinus thunbergii 'Thunderhead') is a tree for specimen planting, accent, privacy screen, and winter interest. It is hardy to USDA zone 5, or down to -20°F (-29°C). This plant likes full sun and dry to moist, sandy, loamy, or clay soil. It grows at a moderate rate into an irregular shape. The evergreen needles keep color all year, and birds visit the tree. It is not a favorite of deer, though hungry deer will eat almost anything.

Pairs well with Little bluestem, Mexican hat, and Feather reed grass.
