Notes

Mugo pine (Pinus mugo var. pumilio) is a shrub for rock gardens, borders, containers, and winter interest. It is hardy to USDA zone 3, or down to -40°F (-40°C). This plant likes full sun and average to moist soil of most types. It grows slowly into a broad, evergreen shrub that tolerates drought and salt. Deer tend to browse other plants first. Birds visit it, so give it room to spread up to 10 feet wide.

Pairs well with Limeglow creeping juniper, Prairie dropseed, and Berry Poppins winterberry.

Native range

Mountains of central and southern Europe.
