Notes

'Volcano' peony (Paeonia lactiflora 'Volcano') is a perennial for borders, cut flowers, and perennial beds. It is hardy to USDA zone 3, or down to -40°F (-40°C). This plant likes full or part sun, average moisture, and loamy soil. Walter Marx bred it, and the deep red flowers open in early summer. The blooms start as a Japanese type and grow into a pompon double. Wiry but strong stems hold the flowers above glossy foliage.

Pairs well with Purrsian Blue nepeta, Aromatic aster, and Japanese spirea.
