Notes

'Whatfield Magenta' carnation (Dianthus 'Whatfield Magenta') is a perennial for borders, cottage gardens, rock gardens, and containers. It is hardy to USDA zone 5, or down to -20°F (-29°C). This plant likes full or part sun and dry to average soil of most types. It is not a favorite of deer or rabbits, though hungry ones will eat almost anything. The fragrant flowers open in spring and again in summer, and they draw butterflies and bees.

Pairs well with Lamb’s ear, Blue fescue, Ornamental onion, and Eden rose.
