Notes

'Akane' apple (Malus domestica 'Akane') is a tree for the food garden. It is hardy to USDA zone 4, or down to -30°F (-34°C). This plant likes full or part sun and dry to moist, sandy, loamy, or clay soil. Akane is grown for fresh eating, cooking, and juice, with a good balance of sweet and sharp flavors. Morioka Experimental Station bred it in 1937. Bees visit the spring blooms, and you need a second apple tree nearby for pollination.

Pairs well with Juneberry, Lupine, and Grape hyacinth.
