'Amethyst' Japanese witch hazel (Hamamelis 'Amethyst') is a shrub for winter interest, woodland gardens, and privacy screens. It is hardy to USDA zone 5, or down to -20°F (-29°C). This plant likes full or part sun and average to wet, clay soil. Fragrant reddish purple flowers open from winter into early spring. Deer usually look elsewhere for a meal. The leaves also turn color in fall.
Pairs well with Oakleaf hydrangea, Christmas fern, and Toad lily.
