Notes

'Black Angel' tree peony (Paeonia suffruticosa 'Black Angel') is a shrub for borders, cut flowers, and perennial beds. It is hardy to USDA zone 4, or down to -30°F (-34°C). This plant likes full or part sun, average moisture, and loamy soil. Fragrant, purple-black, semi-double flowers open in early mid-season and face upward. The ruffled petals have dark flares at the base. Franklin and Angela Chow bred it, and plants reach about 41 inches tall.

Pairs well with Halcyon hosta, Christmas fern, and Grape hyacinth.
