Notes

'Black Hat' rhododendron (Rhododendron 'Black Hat') is a shrub for borders, specimen planting, and shade gardens. It is hardy to USDA zone 4, or down to -30°F (-34°C). This plant likes full sun to full shade and average to moist, sandy or loamy soil. Early trusses of pink and reddish-purple flowers open in spring and have a delicate fragrance. The evergreen leaves are deep purple-green and turn almost black in cold weather. Deer and rabbits usually look elsewhere for a meal.

Pairs well with Elegans hosta, Green Spice coral bells, and Serviceberry.
