Notes

Bluebill (Clematis pitcheri) is a vine for borders, containers, and woodland gardens. It is hardy to USDA zone 5, or down to -20°F (-29°C). This plant likes full sun to part shade and average to moist soil of most types. The nodding flowers last a long time, and the stems are brittle, so tie them to a trellis. Deer and rabbits rarely make it their first choice. It dies to the ground in fall.

Pairs well with Cross vine, Japanese forest grass, and Hardy hibiscus.

Native range

Northern Mexico and southern and central United States.
