Notes

'Chocolate Soldier' columbine (Aquilegia viridiflora 'Chocolate Soldier') is a perennial for borders, cottage gardens, rock gardens, and woodland gardens. It is hardy to USDA zone 3, or down to -40°F (-40°C). This plant likes full or part sun and average to moist soil of most types. The mounding plant grows 9 to 12 inches tall and has fragrant chocolate purple petals with green sepals. Butterflies, hummingbirds, and bees visit the blooms in spring and summer. Deer and rabbits tend to browse other plants first.

Pairs well with Lungwort, Western sword fern, Spanish bluebell, and Red Charm peony.
