Notes

Hairy clematis (Clematis hirsutissima) is a perennial for borders, woodland gardens, and meadows. It is hardy to USDA zone 4, or down to -30°F (-34°C). This plant likes full sun to part shade and dry to moist soil of most types. Unlike most clematis, it does not climb, and its shaggy fruit heads give it the name Lion's Beard. It sits low on the menu for deer and rabbits. Butterflies, hummingbirds, and bees visit the flowers.

Pairs well with Creeping phlox, Switchgrass, and Texas bluebonnet.
