The dark green leaves pick up red highlights through summer and into fall, and the wine red, pipe cleaner-like flower spikes soften to lighter reds in autumn. Rabbits usually look elsewhere for a meal. Leave the seed heads on for winter interest and for overwintering birds and beneficial insects.
